We are looking for musicians at an intermediate to advanced level: (advanced high school level, collegiate music ensemble experience, professional musician). Rehearsals are fun and the musicians expect members to prepare well and the conductor to "rehearse" rather than “run through.” Please note that members value a collaborative, positive culture in the ensemble in which members treat each other with respect and kindness. People are more important than performances.
MEMBERSHIP
AUDITION OVERVIEW
Membership is by audition. We ask for a short video of your playing (smart phone recording is fine) that demonstrates your playing in a lyrical style, a technical style, and scales.
The SWFL Concert Band welcomes prescreen auditions via video. Please send a video (or link to a video) to the conductor at jstevenmoore@me.com. Videos will be evaluated by the conductor, section leader, and band leadership. Based on the prescreen, the audition committee will make a recommendation as appropriate to the situation. This may include immediate acceptance to the ensemble, an in-person audition, acceptance as an on-call substitute, or recommendation for further study prior to re-audition. The band has a limited membership. If there are no openings in the SWFL Concert Band at this time, we will recommend other adult community ensembles for your consideration.
DETAILED AUDITION INFORMATION
SCALES
Chromatic two octaves or full range of the instrument if possible.
If you are an intermediate player:
Written (not concert pitch) E flat, G major, and C major scales. Two octaves if possible. Ascending and descending. Pick a tempo that is as fast as you can play comfortably.
If you are an advanced player:
Written (not concert pitch) A flat, D flat, and A major scales. Two octaves. Ascending and descending. Arpeggio at the end of the scale.
GENERAL PHILOSOPHY
The video should demonstrate your achievement level and represent your playing in a manner that is comfortable for you. No stress, please. Please keep the overall length to no more than 10 minutes including talking. Please keep your embouchure, hand position, and overall playing position visible in the frame
PREPARED SELECTIONS OR ETUDES
Please play one lyrical and one technical selection that represents your current achievement level. Please introduce the excerpt or etude as you wish, but keep the talking to a minimum in the video.
